She earned a B.A. in Psychology and Drama from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1983, a Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School at Duke University in 1986, a Doctorate of Divinity from Drew School of Theology, and an M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling from Winston Salem State University in 2015.
